Boardwalk Empire dvd 1-2 attempts to provide a near comprehensive look at Prohibition and the bootlegging industry in the 1920s.

The show runners temper such ambition with disciplined storytelling: keeping the sprawling narrative in hand and directing it in the most dramatic fashion possible. It starts out slow, but the further is goes, the more entranced you become.

Why the Boardwalk Empire is so popular? The story is solid and unpredictable enough scene-to-scene to keep your interest, and there’s a sense the narrative is building to something much greater with each passing episode.

The writing is fantastic, too. The dialog is beautifully written and the show is packed with great lines, yet these lines never feel forced.

It’s easy to be seduced by the mythos and glamor of America in the 1920s. The screenplay, cinematography, costumes and sets in Boardwalk Empire take every advantage of the distinct look of the time.
